Allison - after the orchiectomy is completed
Chrissie
Chapter 14
By Barbara Lynn Terry
I slept really good that night. It was a lot of things though, the medicine to help the pain, my new friend, and my first operative procedure, orky something or other. There was no turning back now, even if I wanted to, which I didn't. Giggle. Just then, Jenny, my day nurse came in an took my pulse, temperature and blood pressure.
"Well, I see that you're awake. That's good, cause I have to take these readings so Dr. St. Clair can look at them. She'll be here in about ten minutes."
"Ok Jenny. I slept very good last night."
"That's good to hear, Allison. I'll write that down in your chart so Dr. St. Clair can see that you had a good night. How is the pain? Does it still hurt like yesterday?"
"No Jenny, it doesn't. It feels like, I don't know, but it doesn't hurt."
"Good girl. Either you can take pain well, or you heal fast."
"Maybe both?" We both giggled, as Dr. St. Clair came in my room.
"Well, I see we are happy today, as always."
"Yes Dr. St. Clair. I guess I told a joke."
"Good. How do you feel today?"
"I feel good. I don't have any pain. It just feels, uncomfortable? I don't know, but it doesn't hurt now."
"Good. Let me see what your readings are." She looked at Jenny's clipboard. "Good girl, Allison. Everything is normal so far. Jenny, we need a little blood drawn so we can get a hormone count. I also want to check to see how the procedure went. I need to check for any infection" Jenny left.
Dr. St. Clair drew the curtain around my bed and had me lift my nightgown up. She looked at me for a few moments and then she said.
"So you are doing fine, that's good, there is no infection. Jenny says here that you had a good night last night. That's good too. Sometimes after a surgical procedure, no matter how small, some people have a restless night for the the first night or two."
Jenny came back in with a lady from the hosptial lab. She put a hollow rubber tube around my upper arm and tied it in place. Then she started feeling on my arm, where the veins were showing. She took a needle, and put it in one of the veins, and drew out some blood. When she was done, she just smiled, took the rubber tube off of my arm, put a piece of gauze and held it in place with a band-aid. She smiled again and left. (Author's Note: In 1958, blood work and other lab work was done in the hospital lab, not a separate lab, like today.)
"When I get the results back, Allison, I will let you know what the progress is. In the meantime, Jenny has another shot for you. This is a hormone shot. Now that your body is no longer producing testosterone, the male hormone, the estrogens will be free to do what they are supposed to. In a couple of years, you will look like any other girl at school."
"That's what I want, Dr. St. Clair. I want to be able to look like any other girl. Not that I don't already, as I'm told, but I'd like to think my figure and other girl things are natural."
"And they will be, dear. Because you will grow up a female now, and your mind will get even more like a girl's, as time goes on. Right now, you are very much like a girl, anyway. But these hormones will help you become even more so."
"Thank you, Dr. St. Clair."
"I hear your room mate is leaving today. I'll let you two talk for a while then so I can look at your chart Allison. I'm ordering a set of x-rays for later. After Bertie goes home. Okay Allison?"
"Yes ma'am. Thank you."
"You're welcome Allison."
I turned to Bertie with a sad look on my face. "Bertie, do you have to leave? I'll be so lonely without you being here. I know my mom and friends will come to visit, but it's not the same without a roomie."
"I know Allison. I was here two whole days before you came. I was really bored. But tonight, we are coming back for a bit. My parents said so. They really like you Allison."
"I like your family too, Bertie. Your dad is very nice, he even has a very nice smile. That tells me he is happy most of the time."
"Is that so, young lady? Well I guess I am at that," Bertie's dad said with another beaming smile. "Bertie dear, they're getting your discharge papers ready now, so it won't be too much longer. Allison, we'll come back this evening, when your mom and friends are here. I understand that you will have a new roommate tomorrow. Any girl who is a roomie of yours Allison, is very lucky."
"Thanks Mr. McEmory. Anyone who has you and Mrs. McEmory for parents is very lucky too." I got a big hug from both of them and then from Bertie.
My mom worked during the day, so she wouldn't be here, and the girls and Mark would be here later too.
"Bertie, when you leave, will you and your parents come to see me, when my mom comes, tonight?"
"Sure Allison, I already said we would silly."
"We'd be happy to pick your mom up and come together. Is there some way you can let her know, Allison?"
"Thank you, Mr. McEmory. Yes, I'll call her."
I picked up the phone that Dr. St. Clair wanted in my room, and called my mom.
"Hi mom, Mr. McEmory said they will come and get you tonight, so you can come and visit."
"Okay dear, tell them thank you."
"I will mom. See you tonight."
"See you then sweetie. I love you."
"I love you too mom."
"Well Bertie, you can get dressed now, and you can leave anytime. Just remember though, you still have to gargle with warm salt water for a few more days, to stop any infection."
"Yes Jenny, I will. We're coming back later to visit with Allison, anyway."
"Why Bertie, that is very sweet of you."
I got up and went over to Bertie and gave her a hug, and then they left. My mom and the gang would be here later, but they were only going to let a few in at a time, Jenny told me, cause I have way too many visitors. Jenny did say though that it means a lot to someone who is in the hospital to have visitors. I got a shock though, cause just as they brought my lunch to me, Mark and his dad came in.
"Hi Allison, can we come in?"
"Mark!" I exclaimed and got up to give him a huge hug. "I am so happy to see you."
"Yeah me too, how are you? Are you feeling okay?"
"Yeah, I'm okay. It's just a little uncomfortable is all. By Saturday, when I leave, it shouldn't bother me at all."
"Cool. I brought you something. The nurse is bringing it."
"Oh? That's sweet." I got up and gave him a little kiss on the cheek and a big hug.
"Here we are, Allison," Jenny said in her sing song voice. "Your young man has brought you some very nice roses. You know though, Allison, girls love getting flowers from their boyfriends."
"Uhm, I'm only almost ten years old, Mark and I are just good friends, is all."
She winked at me, "sure Allison, whatever you say dear." We giggled and Mark had a puzzled look on his face. Jenny and I knew exactly what she meant. Giggle.
Then my mom and the McEmory's came in. Bertie had a very big smile on her face. I got up and gave each one of them a big hug.
"Thanks for coming back, Bertie. I missed you so much."
"We've only been gone a few hours, young lady," Mr. McEmory said with his beaming smile.
"Yes I know, sir, but I always miss my friends when they're not here or with me."
"I'm your friend Allison, I'll always make sure, that even if I can't come to visit you, I'll call you."
"Thanks Bertie, that means a lot to me right now."
"I know exactly how that feels, sis. I've been there."
"Honey, how do you feel?"
"I'm okay mom. I don't hurt anymore, just well uncomfortable is all. I'm really glad that I am now really on my way to being a real girl."
"Oh girlfriend," Bertie said, "I can't wait til you get back home. I want to come and visit you, and do things with you."
"Okay Bertie, sure. You can come over to my house anytime you want, if your mom and dad will let you." She gave me a big hug.
"And you, young lady, are welcome at our house anytime also. Bertie has done nothing but talk about what she would like to do when you get home.'
"Thank you Mrs. McEmory. I'll be back back home by Saturday. Dr. St. Clair said there is no infection, and she is making sure that my hormones are working right. I had x-rays done when you left Bertie. Dr. St. Clair wanted to make sure everything was fine. So I guess I'm okay now, I just have a few more days to make sure I don't have any reaction to the hormones."
"Well I can see you don't so far."
"Yes Bertie, but this is only the second day and Dr. St. Clair wants to make sure so that when I do go home, there won't be any problems."
"And that's good too Allison."
"Mom, what have you been doing while I'm in here?"
"Oh nothing special dear. I've just been keeping busy waiting for you to come home."
"Okay, what have you really been doing?"
"I've been talking to the McEmory's and to your friends. They'll be here in a few moments. When the girl squad gets here, we're going down to the cafeteria for a bite to eat, while you have your dinner too. Then we'll come back up and visit some more."
"Okay mom. Did Miss Spencer call?"
"Yes she did. She wanted to know how you were doing. I told her fine and she said she will be up to visit tomorrow when she brings your assignments for the week. Right now she is kinda busy grading papers. She said you have very good grades too."
"That's always good to hear. I know I get good grades cause I study. Mom, can I go to a movie with Kelly and Chrissie when I get home?"
"Why of course dear. You can go to a movie anytime if you don't have schoolwork to do, or chores around the house."
"Thanks mom."
"Mark, wanna take me to a movie Saturday? We're going with Kelly, her boyfriend Ryan and Chrissie."
"Sure, okay. I'd like to take you to a movie." You always let them think THEY are TAKING you, never let them think it was all your idea. Giggle.
"Hi," Dr. St. Clair said as she came into the room. "I just stopped by to see how my favorite patient is doing."
"I'm okay Dr. St. Clair. The girl squad should be here later."
"We're here," Dee said poking her head in the door. "how are you feeling girlfriend?"
"Just fine, Dee. Is Miss Spencer coming too?"
"She said tomorrow, cause she needs to grade the papers. We're having a test tomorrow, and she said she will bring the test for you tomorrow, after school, and wait til your done, so she can grade your paper right away."
"Thanks Dee. I like having you for a friend too." She gave me a big hug. "Chrissie, I talked to mom, and she said I can go to the movies on Saturday with you, Mark, Kelly and Ryan. We're gonna have fun. I'm bored already and I've only been here since Saturday.
"What we need to do is have a girls day out sometime after school is out for the summer."
"Sounds good Allison. How about we have a swim day? I mean we could always go to the pool."
"Or we can go to my aunt's house. She has a pool." Melanie said cheerfully.
"Okay, if we can. That way we can just have a girls day with just us."
"Okay Allison, I'll ask her."
"Hey girlfriend, we have to go, cause we all have homework to do. Cya tomorrow?"
"Okay, My parents are here with Bertie and her parents. It'll be okay. Make sure you all study now, giggle."
"Okay Allison, and good luck on your test tomorrow too."
"Thanks Chrissie." They each gave me a big hug and left.
My parents came back up from the cafeteria about fifteen minutes after the girls left. I got another surprise too.
"May I come in young lady?"
"Mr. Marchand!" I yelled. "What ..."
"I heard you were in the hospital from your friends when they came to my store yeterday. I asked where you were and they told me you were here. I have a gift for you." He handed me a box with a nice pink ribbon on it. I opened the box, and gasped.
"Oh Mr. Marchand, you shouldn't have. It's beautiful."
Inside the box was a very nice dress. It had lace around the neckline, hem and sleeves. It was a nice burgundy color.
"Mom, can you help me with the buttons, please?"
"Sure honey. Come on let's see how it looks." We went into the bathroom and I put it on, and mom helped me button it. Then we went out into the room.
"Well you look very pretty in that dress, young lady," Mr. Marchand said with his usual beaming smile.
"Yes you do, Allison," Bertie said. "I'm jealous, giggle."
"Oh Bertie." And we all giggled and the men just laughed.
"Well young lady, I hope you're feeling better. I hear you'll be here for the rest of the week."
"Yes sir, Dr. St. Clair wants to do some more tests on my hormones. She calls it a hormone count."
"Well, you are one heck of a young lady, Allison. I have to go, but I'll see you before you go home."
"Okay Mr. Marchand, sir. Thanks for the dress, it's really beautiful."
"You're welcome young lady." Then he left and we talked about the dress he brought me.
"Mom, why does he do things like that? I mean, he's a nice man and all, but why does he bring me gifts?"
"Because dear, he gives you credit for being very nice and being more grown up than you are. He is a man who lets people know just how much he appreciates how young people behave themelves. Everytime you and the girl squad go somewhere, I get compliments by parents who call me and tell me just how well behaved and polite you really are. And I see that at home too. You help me a lot, even without me asking you. I have a very nice daughter who is respected by her friends and grown ups too. That is something special."
"Thanks mom."
"Honey, we have to leave, but we'll be back tomorrow. Okay?"
"Okay mom." I got hugs from the McEmorys, mom and Bertie, then they left.
"We'll be back tomorrow too, Allison," Mark said as he gave me a hug and a kiss on the cheek.
A little later on, one of the orderlies brought in a girl on something they call a gurney. She was sound alseep. They picked her up and put her in the the bed Bertie had and covered her up. Jenny, who was just going home for the night, put her finger to her mouth telling me to be quiet. I had another roommate. I didn't know her name yet, but she looked to be the same age as me.
I laid my head down and closed my eyes. I must have really slept, cause the next thing I knew, it was morning. Jenny was there with my breakfast tray.
"Thanks Jenny," I said smiling.
"You're welcome Allison. Have you talked with your roomie yet?"
"No, she's been sleeping," the girl in the next bed said.
"Hi Allison, I'm Gwen Simon and I'm nine years old. I'll be ten in August."
"Wow Gwen, my birthday's in August too. What day were you born?"
I was born on the fourteenth."
"Oh my Gosh, Gwen, that's my birthday too. Wow!"
"Oh really," she squealed.
"Yes Gwen, really."
"Well I'll leave you two to talk. Just buzz if you need anything."
"Okay Jenny and thanks."
"Uhm okay, you're welcome."
"You're Allison Kingston, aren't you?"
"Yes Gwen, I am."
"I've seen you on the playground with the girl squad. Everyone says that you're the leader."
"Well Gwen, the girl squad doesn't have a leader. We are just friends who do a lot of things together. I don't know exactly how we got called the girl squad, but, everyone calls us that. Chrissie is my sort of sister. We started out being friends, and then we told each other that we'd be each other's sister, since we have no brothers or sisters. Dee I met at summer camp, and Charla of course, I met at school and Melanie too. But we have a lot of fun. We all have another friend who we call our older sister, cause she's fourteen. Her name is Kelly."
"Allison, if I ask you sometime to play jump rope with me on the playground, will you?"
"Yes Gwen, I'd like to play jump rope with you. And you are welcome to come over by us anytime."
She smiled a very big smile, "Oh thank you Allison. Why does everyone say that you're so stuck up?"
"I don't know, but I like making friends. Have you ever been to Marchand's in the city?"
"Yes I have, with my auntie and my mom."
I took out the dress Mr. Marchand brought me and showed it to Gwen. "This is the dress Mr. Marchand brought for me yesterday. Isn't it beautiful?"
"Oh my gosh, Allison, it is. It's very pretty. Why did he bring you a dress?"
"He said he heard I was in the hospital, and he wanted to bring me a gift."
"He's a nice man. I wish I could get to know him better. Everyone says he likes kids who behave in his store."
"Yes he does. He gave us each gifts a while back, and he even wrote a note with them too."
"Wow, he must really like you and the other girls really much."
"Yes I think so."
"Allison, are you a real girl now?"
"How did you know about why I'm here?"
"It's all over the school. Allison, I know you were a boy once, but I don't care. You're a girl now and I hope you'll be my friend."
"Oh Gwen, I'd be happy to be your friend." I went over and sat on her bed. "Let's pinky swear, that from now on, we'll be friends forever." We hooked our left little fingers together making a bond between two girls.
"Now we're friends forever, Allison." I gave her a big hug.
"Well, what's this. I leave you alone for a few hours, and your hugging already."
"Hi daddy, Hi mom. This is Allison Kingston, daddy."
"THE Allison Kingston? The girl who I've heard so much about from Gwen?"
"Yes sir," I said respectfully.
"Well young lady, all I can say is, I can see that you and Gwen have become friends."
"We even pinky swore daddy. That means that we're friends forever."
"That's good punkin. I'm so glad that you can make decent friends. So Allison, I understand that you're becoming a girl. Can I ask how you decided to be a girl?"
"Well, I guess I've always been, sir. I mean, I never was much good as a boy. I like pretty things and I like to do the things that girls do. Dr. St. Clair says that I'm way too much of a girl to ever be a man. So she asked me if I wanted to be a girl, and I said yes, right away."
"Well, it is nice to know that you know where you're going. I've heard so much about you from Gwen. But tell me, why did they put you in the girls wing of the hospital?"
"Because I'm not a boy. I'm Allison Dawn Kingston and I'm a girl."
"Okay young lady, that's good enough for me."
"May I come in please?"
"Miss Spencer," said cheerfully and got up and gave her a big hug.
"I brought you your assignments for the rest of the week, and I brought you your test that you missed today."
I took the test and Miss Spencer stayed until I finished it. Then she graded the paper.
"You have another fine grade, Allison. Did you know that you're my brightest student?"
"Yes ma'am, or so I'm told, giggle."
"Well you are, and you should be proud that you can get good grades like this. Not everyone can, you know. So anyway, Allison, how are you feeling?"
"Just fine Miss Spencer. After my procedure, it hurt for a while, but now it doesn't. Dr. St. Clair says that I'm doing good."
"That's good to hear Allison. We only have a few more weeks of school left. I will have you for one more year, and then you'll be going on to junior high school. I'll miss that cheery smile of yours. I actually miss it already, and you've only been gone for one school day." I gave her the biggest hug I could.
"I'll miss you too Miss Spencer. I'm going to camp again this summer. I'm going to see if my new friend can come with me."
"Allison, there you go again. Always thinking of others. You know, that's what makes you so very special."
"Yeah, I guess. I just like helping others and making friends."
"Allison, do you know what the word charisma means?"
"No ma'am."
"Well to put it so you can understand it, it means that you get people follow you and be loyal to you, like the girl squad. When they say a person is charismatic, they mean that they can make friends really easy without even trying. You young lady, are a very charismatic person. To have that at a very young age, is something very special."
"How do you spell that, Miss Spencer?"
"C h a r i s m a, charisma. C h a r i s m a t i c, charismatic. Oh, You wrote it down. Good girl. See you learned something new today."
"Yes Miss Spencer, thank you."
"No dear, thank you. Thank you Allison Dawn Kingston, for just being you. You brighten up my entire day when I see you in class. I don't know what it is, but something about you, just makes me calm."
"Thank you ma'am."
"Oh my, look at the time. I have to go Allison, but I'll be back tomorrow after school okay."
"Okay Miss Spencer, good night."
"Good night, dear." She gave me a hug and my parents gave me a hug as did the McEmorys and Bertie too.
"We have to leave too sweetheart," my mom said.
"Okay mom, I love you."
"I love you too sweetheart. Good night dear." She gave me another hug and a kiss on the cheek.
When they were gone, Gwen said good night too, as she was very tired. I never knew why she was there, and she never said. But she was happy to have a roommate. I closed my eyes and went to sleep too.
Okay, okay, so I don't like mornings. Who does? I woke up to see them taking Gwen out of the room. Jenny came in and I asked where Gwen was going.
"She's going to surgery dear. She has appendicitis and they are going to take out her appendix."
"I have a friend who had her appendix out. She said it hurt for a few weeks afterwards. Is Gwen going to hurt too?"
"Well there will be some pain, but we will give her some medicine to help her, so it won't really bother her."
"That's good."
"Well, Dr. St. Clair said that there is no reason to keep you here past tomorrow, Allison. That means you can go home tomorrow."
"I'd like that, Jenny, but I'll miss you. You've been so nice."
"Why thank you dear. You know that means a lot to me coming from you."
"Yeah I know, I have carsma."
"Giggle. You mean charisma, Allison. Yes, that you do."
"Yeah that's what I said, giggle."
"Oh you little imp." We both giggled.
I called my mom to let my mom know what Jenny told me. I told my mom to let Miss Spencer know that I was coming home tomorrow and to call Mr. Marchand. Then I called Chrissie.
"Oh wow sis, that's great! I'll call the other girls and tell them. I'm so glad you're not staying til Saturday. That means everything is okay, doesn't it Allison?"
"Yes Chrissie, it does."
"Yayyyyyyyyyy, my sister's coming home tomorrow." Chrissie squealed and I had to hold the phone away from my ear.
"Chrissie I'm glad too, but my new roommate is here to get her appendix out. She's in surgery right now."
"Oh, well I'm sure you'll want to visit her."
"Oh yes Chrissie, I do. Her name is Gwen and she is the same age as I am. Our birthdays are on the same day even."
"Wow Allison, that's great. Now I know you'll want to visit her."
"Yes Chrissie, I do. You know what'll be great though? I'll ask Dr. St. Clair if she can come to camp with us. Then we can have our birthday parties together, with everyone there."
"That would be great, Allison. What about Bertie though?"
"I'll make sure she can come too."
"Wow, that'll be a great summer. All of us together with two new friends. I'm going to like camp this year."
"Me too, Chrissie. Uhm Chrissie, Dr. St. Clair is here and wants to tell me something. I'll keep talking so you can hear too."
"Oh Cool sis."
"Hi Allison, I've got some good news for you. Everything is going fine. I see no reason to keep you here any longer. You can go home tomorrow. I've already talked to your mom and she's very happy that you're coming home. What do you think?"
"Thank you Dr. St. Clair. I've got Chrissie on the phone and she just heard everything you said. She's happy too."
She smiled, "I'm glad. You know young lady, you are very well thought of. I for one think you're going to go far in this world when you grow up."
"I hope so, Dr. St. Clair."
"Okay, well I'll see you bright and early. I've already made out your discharge papers for eight o'clock in the morning. Jenny will bring you breakfast, if you want it. Otherwise, your on your way home."
"Uhm no breakfast here Dr. St. Clair. I'll have something at home."
"Okay, you're the boss." We giggled. I liked Dr. St. Clair. She has done a lot to make me feel like someone special.
It was time for me to go to sleep for one last night in the hospital. I was glad I was going home, but sad for Gwen, cause she had to stay here for a long while. I thought that tomorrow night, mom, I and the girl squad should come and visit her. I'll talk to mom when she comes to get me.
Mornings are for the birds, not people, especially kids. I hate mornings, but I have to go to school and I have other things that can only be done in the daytime. So, I better get up and get dressed. Jenny came in and wanted to know if I wanted breakfast and I said no, I will eat when I get home.
"Okay Allison. We're going to miss you around here."
"I know I seem to do that to people I meet."
"How's that, dear?"
"When I leave, everyone says they'll miss me. I'll miss you too Jenny. You're a good nurse."
"Why thank you Allison, coming from you that's a compliment."
"Are you ready honey?" My mom asked as she came in the room?
"Yes mom, I am. But be very quiet, Gwen needs her rest."
I went over to Gwen's bed and kissed her on the cheek and hugged her lightly. I told her I would be back tonight to visit. She didn't even wake up.
"Guess what Allison? Usually we have a candy striper take you down to the front door. But today I asked if I could and they said okay. So I'll be taking you down to the car."
"That's great Jenny."
"So then, are you ready?"
"Yes Jenny, I'm ready."
"Okay young lady, in the wheel chair. It's hospital policy. You get one last free ride." We giggled and I sat in the wheel chair and Jenny started pushing me out of the room, when Gwen said:
"I'll be waiting girlfriend. Make sure you come, okay."
I looked back and smiled at Gwen. "I promise Gwen, I'll come with my mom and the girl squad."
"Okay. I'm gonna be bored without you here. But I'm glad that you're going home." I got up and went to her and gave her a big hug.
"You heal fast Gwen so we can play jump rope before school lets out."
"I won't be in school the rest of the year. I have to stay here for two weeks, and then I have to stay home for about two months, so I do heal."
"Well, I'll come and visit here everyday, and I'll visit you at home too. What is your phone number Gwen?" She gave it to me, and I sat back down in the wheel chair. I waved at Gwen and she waved back and we started for the hospital entrance.
"Jenny, will Gwen be all right?"
"Yes Allison, Gwen will be fine."
"Good."
We got to the front door, and I stood up. I gave Jenny a big hug and told her I'd see her when I come to visit Gwen. I didn't see our car, and I was wondering if mom forgot to park near the entrance.
"What are you looking for, dear?" Mom asked.
"Our car, mom. Where is it?"
"Oh I have a surprise for you. You see that big black car over there? Guess whose it is."
"Gosh mom, I don't know."
"Mr. Marchand is giving us a ride home."
A man in a black uniform got out of the car and came around and opened the door for us. We got in the car, and Mr. Marchand was there with another present for me.
"Well Allison, I see that you're wearing the dress I gave you. I think though that that outfit will go good with these."
He held up a very small case with a beautiful set of earrings in them. They were made of crystal that showed rainbow colors as they dangled in the light. He gave them to me, and mom put them in my ears.
"Mr. Marchand, they're beautiful. I like the rainbow colors they have."
"Thank you, Allison. Just seeing the look on your face is thanks enough for me. Would you like to have some breakfast?"
"Uhm yes, I would. I was gonna eat something a home."
"Well, can I take you two ladies out for breakfast this morning? I don't get to do this very often, and I am hungry too."
"Thank you Mr. Marchand, sir. You're very kind." He gave me a hug.
We went to a restaurant called the International House of Pancakes. I had two pancakes with a little syrup and a glass of milk and a glass of orange juice. I took my time and ate small bites. Mr. Marchand was watching me all the time.
"Aren't you hungry, Allison?"
"Yes sir, I am, but I don't eat much. Mom says I get that from her."
"I bet you do. You're very much a young lady, and I am very proud to know you and your friends."
"Thank you sir."
He just smiled and finished his coffee. Then when we had finished our breakfast, we got up and Mr. Marchand paid the lady at the cash register. Then we got back in his car and he took us home.
"I hope you keep coming to my store, young lady. We enjoy having you there. You always set a good example for other kids who are there too. I don't mean I just want you to buy things from my store, but when you are there, others see how well behaved you are, and they act the same way. It's too bad that you're too young to work. I could use a good PR person like you."
"What is PR, sir?"
He laughed a little, then he explained. "PR Allison, means public relations. A PR person does things for the good of the store, so people will come in and buy."
"Oh! Okay. Thank you Mr. Marchand. You're very kind, sir." Then he took us home.
"Allison," Mr. Marchand said as I got out of the car. "I'll see you when come to shop at my store. Good luck young lady."
"Thank you Mr. Marchand, sir." We went in the house. Next: Chrissie - Chapter 15 - Back To School

ok, i'm not impressed at this story at all. the quality of writing HAS improved significantly, but i have several problems with it.
the most obvious problem is that the character doesn't think enough. after reading 6 chapters, covering many years, i should feel like i know the main character and most of the socondary. but i don't... i feel like i've been folowing around a manaquin that people dress up and make like it's talking.
for another, a story about just transitioning at ANY age is not that entertaining. you make it out to be the whole of this person's life. you just gloss over anything that might have made the story interesting and focus on just trying to get the character where you want them to be.
with those two being said, i don't think anyone under ten can really be trusted to make decitions conserning thier medical treatment. i'm sure i could convince my niece that it would be "REALLY COOL" to get an arm amputated. then she would throw temper tantrums and stuff until she got her way. children don't understand things compleatly yet. i remember being that young, and i was mature and intellegent from my age, but i coudln't have been trusted with any kind of medical diagnosis like that. TS is a really weird condition in that it can only be self diagnosed, we have no way of really knowing if a person is or isn't TS. the questions that phycs ask even today are a joke. i've read medical texts from even just 20 years ago, and they are even more of a joke. a doctor who is willing to diagnose a child at that age is an idiot. A parent has a LOT of control over a child. they can tell children things and they totaly belive them. and it's VERY hard to tell if the kid is lying. remember when those investigators found out that all those kids had been subjected to satanic rituals and sexual abuse and stuff.. the kids TOTALY belived it. there is a GREAT test thats been dne many times, but this is the was it was presented to me. a child is told by somone that they once got lost in a mall, and the child's siblings are told to say it happened but nothing else. after just one session the child has actual memories of it happening and can't be convinced it never happened, most come up with whole elaberate stories around it, saying what happened to them while they were lost, what they say and who they talked to. bottom line, children are too easily manipulated.
if all this happened to you, you're either very lucky that you just happened to have this condition, can you imagine what would have happened if you haddn't been TS. wait, there's a story about that, "as nature made him" it's one of the books listed in the left margin. this story isn't a happy one. this story scares me to death. the thought that parents and doctors would actualy be willing to do all this to a child is just wronge and evil.

One last thing. in the first chapter, (whch is 99.9% accurate, right) you mention Chrissie having a credit card. in fact, it seems to be a kinda big plot point. you also mention that this is taking place in the 1950's, what credit card whould she have had in the 1950's? magnetic strips whern't invented until the '70s. i don't think the dinner's club card could be used to purchase clothes. and it wasn't accepted all that many places. credit cards in '70s whern't accepted that many places. and NO ONE would have accepted a first grader with one.
ok, that's all i'll say. if you really are writing from experiance though (being 99% accutrate), i hope you get some help, you really need it.

Okay Doragoon, I really don't care what your personal thoughts are on this at all...You do not know me or anything about me, and you do not know the wisdom I had at even age 5 when I could spell most words...However, you are entitled to your opinion, and Yes "Chrissie" did have a credit card...whether you believe me or not I don't really care..."Chrissie" and I know the actual facts...and I do not glossover anything in the story to put me "character" where I want her. Allison, is the character I put in my place as me...and I knew exactly what I wanted...and just because you have had bad experiences with psychiatrists, don't put that on the entire psychiatric profession...it seems by your comments that you are dissatisfied with life period. I am not...at 55 almost 56, I have had one heck of a life as a female...You may not have and you may have other problems also...but I won't go into that. "Chrissie" and I are writing this in collaboration with her as the "silent" author. So, that being said, it is apparent that my autobiography doesn't sit well with you cause you can't have the experiences, the love, acceptance and respect I had from the age of 7 on up. So you can be jealous all you want...I do not care.

nice 1 barbara,i myself personally am enjoying this "well life"story.i myself have always known since my earliest memories that i would of been better off being born female but hey life goes on,but still ive also have had a good life and have been blessed with 6 beautiful children(she never knew) so let people think what they want and just keep the chapters coming.

Thank you, Louise...I know a lot of people who read Chrissie melt right into the story cause they wish they could be like Allison (me, giggle). I was very fortunate to be raised where I was and to have the family and friends I had. Even though the names in Chrissie are fictional, the story is not...I hop eeveryone keeps reading...cause those days were very important in my later mental development as well as physical development (giggle). N e way Louise, thanks for your comment.
I read all 14 parts this morning and am enjoying the story. While there were some things that seemed anachronistic, there wasn't anything that couldn't be explained by the fact that this is a juvenile memoir.
Being a child of that era myself, I can verify that the criticism that some have made over certain details is unwarranted.
*Note to All* Yes, there were credit cards in the '50s, though some were just printed cards. I don't remember when the embossed plastic card came into use, but it was well before the use of magnetic stips. Also, it was not all that uncommon for families to have open accounts with various merchants in town. Remember that American Express started in the 1850s.
Part of what makes a story enjoyable for me is whether I can care about the main character. If that happens, then I want to know more about them and find out what happens next.
So, please tell us more! I want to know what happens next. =)
I am going to say this at this point cause some people think that because I am, or someone else is transsexual, that we are sexpots and care for nothing more than a good time in the sack. Or that we constantly think about sex every waking moment. That simply just is not true. When Chrissie wanted me to wear her clothes and play games with her like a sister, I was hesitant at first. But then, I saw that maybe I needed this, maybe this is what life was supposed to be like for me. I let the girl in me come out at Chrissie's urging, and became physically female later on in Life...We'll get to that, but not for several chapters in the story. But I became physically female in order to live my life to the fullest as a woman...not a whore...if people read my stories, expecting to find domination, detailed sexual acts, or detailed acts of violence like S&M, then find something else to read. My stories are for everyone, including young TG/TS people. My stories are written on how I grew up, not the way other people grew up. I had fun in my life as a female and the only regret I have is, that I wasn't born female. Other than that, I have no regrets. And if some people can't accept what is written as it happened...oh well, then that is their problem.
For those who like my stories, thanks a bunch, I really do appreciate everything.

Hi!
Well I haven't commented before, and only just registered - even tho' I have read many stories at the Closet.
I have read and re-read this story up to the latest - numbering 14 - and have also seen the various comments to the Author.
I too am of the era of the 50's but only from 1955 - so I guess I'm a Youngin. However, I do remember many and varied circumstances as You describe. And, being an historical buff, as it were, as well as a professional person, i.e., an Accountant, I know very well of financial trends and histories.
Having become ill at the age of 2 - deathly so - and having that continue to the age of 12 again, and being in Hospital constantly, I can truly relate to the compassion and friendliness and love of the Nurses and the Women and Girls within and without my sphere. This chapter of Yours (14) really reminded me of that. And! It was the Women and the Girls that were there and helped and comforted me - especially Mom. I went through a lot of Kleenex reading this last chapter of Yours!
You say that this story of Yours is auto-biographical. How lucky You are and have been. I do know in my little sleepy town - IF I had - it too would have supported me. Always has. Of course it helped having the toughest "Greaser" as my older Sister's boyfriend, too - Hee Hee!
Now as to the Credit Card. Well I have been, and still am, an Accountant since 1976, and have changed Canadian Tax Law, and have had an American Express Card since the 70's as well. The very first "Credit" card was a Sears card in the early 50's - (1952 I think). And it was after that that Macy's, etc. issued same. These cards were only good at the applicable stores. American Express and Diner's Club cards, however, were not Credit Cards but Charge Cards. The difference being that with a charge card, one must pay the account in full within the statement due date. And, the Amex and Diner's at that time - 50's and 60's and somewhat of the 70's - were accepted only for Travel, e.g., hotels, airlines and few exclusive shops. Hence, the Assured Reservations which is still practiced today. Yes they did have what were called "Charge Plates" in the 50's and 60's - and these were used by local stores and small chains to facillitate customer requirement - after Sears - until Barclay's out of the UK put out the first "Visa" card.
So there You go!
Anyway, - I Love this story of Your life - again wishing it were my own. Sigh...
Please do not tarry to the next parts of Your revelations to us.
With admiration and respect to You and Yours

1. your psych checking out your temp/infection and hormone lvls seems a bit odd, as well as the lack of mention about other doctors, like a surgeon, edoctrinologist, ect.
but it is a minor point, and could be due to the aging of memories or the after effects the drugs....or maybe she was a doctor.
2. i would encourage you to find your old missing freinds charla and dee that you said you said you had lost contact with in HS, if you can.
kudos on a good story, and the improvements in writing.
grin. from the detailed mention in EACH chapter about the lavender bath salt, can i guess you still greatly enjoy them today?
