CHRISSIE - CHAPTER 9
Allison's Thanksgiving
By Barbara Lynn Terry

I woke to the buzzing of the alarm clock. The Sun was shining through the window and I thought, okay, time to get up. I went in to the bath room and ran my bath putting in my lavender scented oil and beads. I turned the water off and eased myself into the luxurious scent that filled the room. I sat in there just sliding in and out of the water so that my body was covered in the nice scent. Then I took the wash cloth and held it over my back to let the cascade down it. Ooooohhhh it felt so good. After the water started to cool, I got out and patted myself down with the terry cloth towel. I then put some body lotion so my skin felt smooth all over. I then cheated a little bit and put on some nice lavender perfumed body powder. I wrapped the towel around me from under my arms and went out into the bedroom.

I then went to my vanity, and put on my rose colored slip set starting with the panties and then the slip. I sat down on the vanity bench after removing my skirt, blouse and shoes. I put on a little makeup so that my nose wouldn't shine in the sunlight. Mom said I could wear just a little, but not too much because I was only nine years old. With that finished, I went and put on my rose colored blouse and slid the pink jumper over it. I sat down and put on my socks and white flats and buckled the ankle strap. I then made sure my hair was still neat and presentable. It needed a little brushing and that took all of ten minutes. My hair is longer than it was. so it takes a little longer to brush. After that was done I looked at myself all over to make sure everything was straight, and saitisfied with my look for the day, I was ready for breakfast.

I came into the kitchen and gave mom a hug and kiss.

"Good morning, mom," I said cheerfully.

"Good morning, sweetheart. Did you sleep well, last night?"

"Yes, Mom, I did."

Mom had made bacon (crisp) and eggs. I went to the refrigerator and took out the orange juice and poured myself a glass, and then I sat down with mom, to eat. We didn't talk much during breakfast, that would wait until I got home from school.

"You know, dear, Halloween is coming up. What would you like to be this year?"

"Gee, mom. I hadn't thought about that yet. I don't know, really. I'll ask Dee and Chrissie if they have any ideas."

Speak of the devil and look who should arrive. The doorbell rang and I went to answer it. It was Dee and Chrissie. Since we still had a little time, I invited them in.

"Dee, Chrissie? Mom was asking me what I want to be this Halloween. I told her I didn't know. Do you have any ideas, maybe?"

"I have one," Chrissie answered. "Why don't you be a bride? I don't mean like the ones you usually see, but a very, beautiful one. I could go as the groom. I think it would look cute."

"Think that is good, idea," Dee said also.

"Why girls, that is a wonderful idea. What do you think Allison?"

"I like it, And what are you going to be, Dee?" I asked.

"A bridesmaid. Then we could all go as the bride's contingent."

"My, Dee," mom said surprised. " Where did you learn that big word?"

"In spelling last week. We had words that we were supposed to spell and Allsion took a simple word, and so did Chrissie, but I looked it up in the dictionary and it means quota like in a group. The bride's contingent is her quota of people for that group. Like bridesmaids, flower girls, maid of honor, and so on."

"Well, I am impressed, Dee," mom said. "Okay, girls, you had better get to school. I'm sure that Charla will be waiting."

I kissed mom and gave her a hug, told her that I loved her, and we left for school. When we got to Charla's corner she was waiting. She was dressed in her gray skirt and gray sweater, with her black Mary Jane's. She was standing there looking around when she saw us and came over.

"I thought you guys would never get here!" She exclaimed.

"Why, Charla? What's wrong?" Dee said concerned.

"There's been some guy driving around the block, and everytime he would look over at me. I was beginning to think you weren't coming."

Just then, a car came around the corner, and looked in our direction. When he saw there were four of us, he decided to keep going. I thought to my self that we should come early tomorrow and wait and see if this car comes back.

"Girls, listen. We should come here tomorrow a little earlier and see if that car comes back. If it does I want to get the license number, without that guy knowing so we can tell the police." I said.

"Good idea, Allison. I think he might be trying to pick up little girls," Dee responded. Then she said. "In New York, they have guys like him dime a dozen. We always had to look over our shoulders when walking down the street. That's why I never went out very often, only when I had a couple of my friends along."

"Okay, what say we get up a little early, eat breakfast and head out right away," Chrissie added.

"I think that's a good idea, Chrissie," I had responded.

We then walked on to school and got there and sat down in our classroom, just as the bell rang. When Miss Spencer asked why we were 'just' on time, we told her and then we told her what we planned to do. She then said, alright and began to address the class on safety.

"Boys and girls. Something happened today that frightened one of our classmates. While waiting for her friends to walk with her to school, Charla was concerned that a man driving around her corner several times, may have wanted to pick her up. Now class, this is something you all must be aware of, including the boys. If someone you think is out to harm you or scare in any way, you report that right away. Do you understand class? This is nothing to joke about. It is very serious."

We all said yes that we understood, and she began the lessons for the day. After school was out, and my mom wasn't home yet, I told the girls we should walk Charla home. The all agreed and we went to Charla's house with her, and told her mother. Her mother was so grateful that Charla had friends like us, she invited us over for Sunday dinner, including our parents. We said we would let her know and left for our own homes. As we walked, and got to the corner that Charla usually meets us at, that same car was parked by the curb and the man was sitting there watching us. I made a mental note of the license plate and we kept walking. When we got about almost a block away the man pulled out from his parking space and slowly moved toward us. There was a telephone booth on the next corner and I went in and dialed the oeprator. I told her what the problem was and that I needed the police. When I had told the sergeant who answered who I was and what the problem was and which direction we would be walking and the license number of the car. I hung up. We didn't get three blocks from the phone booth, when we heard a siren. The police had the man pulled over. We let out a very big sigh of relief, and had a group hug. The officer got him out of the car, handcuffed him and put the man in the back of his police car, and said something into his radio's microphone. We stood there and watched and a little bit later, a police van came and stopped by the other police car. They took the man, who was handcuffed and put him in the van. We then walked back to the officer and gave him what we knew happened as well as this morning. The officer said thank you, girls, and we left for home.

Mom was already home when I got to my house, by a half an hour. I said goodbye to Dee and Chrissie and went inside. As I stepped inside my house, I began to shake really bad. My mother came out to see if it was me and she had a very concerned look on her face.

"Allison, what's wrong? You look as pale as a ghost."

I ran to my mother and threw my arms around her and still trembling, she asked.

"Allison, who scared you like this? Tell me."

"Mom, just hold me please, please. I had a very bad experience and it just caught up to me when I got in the house. Please, mom."

She took me over the sofa and just held me. Then I started to cry. The tears came streaming out like Niagara Falls. I was still trembling and couldn't stop somehow. After quite a while had went by, I started to feel okay. Not all right, but just okay.

"Mom? There was this guy this morning that was driving around by where Charla was waiting for us. Charla was real worried. Then we waited just a bit longer and that same guy came around again, but he kept going when he saw us. Then after school, because of that, we walked Charla home. After we came back from Charla's and got to the corner she meets us at, this same guy was parked there. When we walked down the street he started following us. There's a phone booth on fourth street and Rogers avenue. I went in and dialed the operator and had her get me the police. They arrested him and we gave the officer what we knew."

"My God, darling. I am so surprised that this happened. We haven't anything like that in this town since twenty years before you were born. Oh, Honey, I am so sorry. Do you feel like eating anything?"

"No, mom. Not right now. Maybe later, okay."

"Okay, Sweetheart. You just go upstairs now and relax."

I kissed mom on the cheek and gave her a big hug. I went upstairs and changed out of my school clothes and put my coral pajama set on. They even had little bunny feet. As I laid down on my bed, I heard the phone ring. I couldn't hear what was being said as the events of the day were running through my mind. Then I heard mom say.

"Tomorrow, at the school. Alright June, we'll be there."

"Honey, that was Miss Spencer. She said that you, Dee, Chrissie and Charla are to go to the school auditorium tomorrow, when you get to school and we, the parents are to come too." My mom said as she walked into my room.

I looked at her and was still sniffling a little. She came and sat on the bed. I sat up too and she just held me. I felt very safe in her arms. What happened today had scared me so much, I just couldn't get it out of my mind. What if that guy had followed us home and our parents weren't there? I had never had anything like this happen before now, and I was still scared. Mom felt my trembling as she held me and then said.

"Allison, that was a brave thing you did today. I'm not to tell you anything that is going on tomorrow, as Miss Spencer said it is a surprise for all four of you girls. Honey, listen to me. I'm a grown woman, and if something like that happened to me, I would be frightened too. I mean, I'm no match for a grown man. What you girls did today, was very brave."

"Mom, I was thinking. What if we didn't know what to do? What if he followed us home and you weren't here? I'm scared, mom."

"Now, darling, hush. I don't blame you for being scared. But I'm here now and I'll use a skillet on the first son . . . man that tries to hurt my daughter." I cried again and mom could see I wasn't in the supper mood tonight.

"Let's go downstairs and watch some tv. Just you and I."

"Okay, mom. but please, don't let me go. Okay?"

"Oh no darling. I will be right there with you. There is nothing to be afraid of anymore."

I must have fallen asleep because the next thing I knew the sun was coming in through my bedroom window. I covered my mouth as I yawned, and then I stretched interlacing my fingers and pushing the palms of my hands towards my feet. I sat up and saw that the alarm was just ready to beep. I pushed the button turning it off, and got up. I went in and did my bubble bath, patted down and put on some body lotion, and went to get dressed. I selected my Royal Navy blue skirt with a light blue blouse, and my Royal Navy blue blazer. It even had an emblem on the left side of two lions on either side of a shield. I selected white panties and slip and today I selected blue socks and again my white flats with the ankle strap. After getting dressed, I had another idea. I went into my mother's room and sprayed a little perfume into the air and stepped through it, like I had seen mom do a lot of times. Then I went down to breakfast.

"Wow, mom. You look pretty!" I exclaimed.

"Why thank you, sweetheart. And I must say, you look very pretty today, also."

"Thank you, mom."

Mom had on a blue dress that you would probably see Donna Reed wearing on her series. It was a print dress that fanned out from the waist to the hem and came to her knees. Her hair was done in a very nice curly style and her makeup was perfect. I went over and gave her a kiss and a hug and thanked her for last night.

"Your welcome, honey, anytime. Say, isn't that my perfume you're wearing?"

"Yes mom, it is. Do you like it?"

"Well, yes I do. That's why I wear it." We both giggled and ate our breakfast.

Then we went and got our coats. As we walked out the door, Chrissie and her mom were just coming to the door.

"Is it all right if we ride with you today?" Chrissie asked as they approached.

"Why, of course. We have room," my mother answered.

"Dee and her parents are picking up Charla and her mom at their house," Chrissie volunteered.

I looked at Chrissie and then I asked. "Do you know what this is all about that our parents have to come to school?"

"No a clue, Allison, not a clue."

My mother and Chrissie's mom just looked at us and smiled. What did we do? I wondered. We pulled up and parked in the parking lot and Dee, her father, Charla and her mom, came at the same time. We just looked at each other puzzled, and continued on into the building. When we got to the auditorium, I heard Miss Spencer say into the microphone. "And here they are now." The whole auditorium erupted with applause.

"Girls, will you come up here on stage please," Miss Spencer commanded. "Your parents can sit right down here in front." We went up on stage and our parents took their seats.

"All right, children. Something happened in our town yesterday. These four ladies were instrumental in bringing it to a halt very quickly. A man, who was an escaped criminal from another state was harrassing these four young ladies yesterday and as a group they put a halt to it by calling the police. The man has been arrested and will be returned from where he escaped. Thank God, these girls were not harmed in any manner. Now girls, when I call your names, please come up and get you plaques that were made last night in your honor."

Our names were called one by one and we received plaques that said we were students of the year. Each in our turn thanked Miss Spencer, and the she asked me if I had anything to say.

"The only thing I want to say is this. If someone is following you, or doing something you know or think is wrong and you don't have any money to call the police, then dial the operator and she will connect you. What happened yesterday, scared me almost to death. But I didn't let is show until I got home, then I broke down and cried and trembled I was so scared. If you are scared, don't let it show at the time, wait til later to let it show." I said thank you and sat down.

School was declared over for the day and the kids just yelled and ran out of the building. "Well," said Miss Spencer, "I guess that went over really well, didn't it?"

"Miss Spencer, why did we get these plaques?" I asked.

"Because Allison, what you did yesterday, is nothing short of heroism. The city is making a plaque to be shared by the whole school honoring what you did yesterday. It will be put in the trophy case. I had no idea what had happened until officer McKinley called me and told me what had transpired. I made these in my home last night and then I called the principal and told her what had happened. I just want you to know, that I am proud to be your teacher." I blushed as did the other girls.

Well Halloween came and went and we didn't go out because of what happened. But we were happy that a criminal was caught and wouldn't be around here anymore. Well, what can I say, school is school and not much happens except the teacher talks, we listen, do homework. Ho hum, well I guess that is the extent of what we do as students.

The month of November went by pretty quickly and before we knew it Thanksgiving week was here. I had wondered how come there was no turkey in the refrigerator thawing out. There was no cranberry sauce (my favorite) or pumpkin pie, or even whipped cream. Puzzled I asked mom if she bought the turkey yet for Thaksgiving.

"We're not having Thanksgiving dinner here, sweetheart."

"Where are we having it, mom?"

"At the civic center, dear. The mayor is going to present you girls with the plaque for the school. Your principal, Mrs. Blanchard is going to be there, Miss Spencer, Dee, Chrissie and Charla, and the other girl what is her name now, oh yes, Melanie Troy as well as all the parents and officer McKinley. We are going to have a great time, Allison. You'll see."

On Thanksgiving day, we went to the city's civic center, and there we were ushered to our seats.

"Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls. Welcome to this year's Thanksgiving dinner at our beloved police memorial civic center. Today, this special event is to honor four young ladies in our community who were essential in capturing a wanted criminal. Because of their quick action, disaster in our town was averted and we can sleep well tonight. These young ladies will come up on stage when I call their names and receive a plaque of honor from a grateful town. This plaque will be in the trophy case at the grammar school where these young ladies attend. Now, Allison Kingston, Chrissie Jaeger, Diedre Williams, Charla Schmidt, will you please come up and receive the plaque of honor?"

We got up and walked up on the stage. Instead of the mayor, who was a man in his fifties, I had heard, but had a slim build and a full head of brown hair, officer McKinley stood up and presented all four of us with the plaque. he was a nice man. early thirties, I guessed, very nice slim build and a crop of blond hair.

"Allison, Chrissie, Charla and Dee. Will you please put one hand on the plaque, please?" Officer McKinley said. We did and then there were cameras going off all over the place and even the photographer from the newspaper was there also. With our hands still on the plaque, we took it over to Mrs. Blanchard who was sitting on stage and presented her with it for safe keeping in our trophy case.

The mayor stood back up and said into the microphone. "Let us bow our heads for our Thanksgiving prayer. Oh Lord we thank you for the food you given us in abundant bounty. We also thank you for looking out for our young children. Amen. Bon appetit ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls."

With that we dug in and had a feast. Everybody was congratulating us on a job well done. Then Melanie came over to us, and gave each one of us a big hug.

"Oh, guys, I don't know what I would have done if anything ever happened to any of you. You are my dear friends."

"Thanks, Mel," I said. "And you are our dear friend, too."

When the meal was over we visited with the mayor for a bit and officer McKinley and a host of others we didn't know but everyone in town knew who the girl squad was.

NEXT: Chrissie - The girl squad.

Barbara, another nice chapter to this story, but for some reason, this chapter read as if it was written in a rush. There are a lot of rough edges here that need to be smoothed out that I haven't noticed in the rest of the story.

Please consider watching your word choice. In many of the paragraphs you use the same word two or three times which does get repetitious. For example, "little" and "longer" in paragraph two and "him" in the scene with the officer and the crook.

You could also watch what your characters are doing from sentence to sentence.

"I wrapped the towel around me from under my arms and went out into the bedroom.

I then went to my vanity, and put on my rose colored slip set starting with the panties and then the slip. I sat down on the vanity bench after removing my skirt, blouse and shoes."

When did she put on the skirt, blouse and shoes?

This is the first time in this series that I have actually been distracted by awkward sentences and lapses in story logic. You may want to do a little more proofing, but otherwise it has been a delightful piece.

Andy

Mea Culpa. Because of my connection problems, I didn't backstop Barbara on this episode. - Sorry, if and when I get the opportunity, I will post a corrected version. -- Erin

My dear Andy. You think just like man. Now while I agree that there are typos in the story, I have read and re-read chapter nine.

I did not remove my clothes from my body, but from the vanity stool where I had set them the night before. You aren't reading this as a story but you are reading each chapter independently. I suggest you go back and start over and this time digest what you read.

I "removed" the clothes from the vanity stool and set them on the bed so I wouldn't sit on them, silly.

Ah, but that's not the way it was written, you wrote as I quoted I sat down at the vanity after removing my skirt, blouse and shoes

The way it reads is that you sat down after undressing, you didn't mention that you removed the clothes from the stool. Thus the confusion!

Okay, Andy. But I still say that you were thinking like every man does. However, I sometimes get so wrapped up in the story, I just take it for granted that everyone will read at least the last part of the previous chapter to get into the current one. I've had boyfriends like that. Nothing personal, Andy. I just find it humorous. After all, I am a woman. Giggle.

Hi Barbara,

I'm a little late getting to this, and because of Erin's note I won't say a word about the technical stuff. I just wanted to say that I'm pleased that you've tackled a serious issue for kids. It both improves the quality of your story and extends a message that needs more frequent repitition.

Good job.
